Online labs are proven to be effective instructional means. This, however, only holds when the inquiry learning process that is supposed to take place when students who engage with an online lab are adequately scaffolded. The design of focused, flexible, and adaptive scaffolds needs a detailed and dedicated analysis of the inquiry process and problems that students may encounter when entering an inquiry learning process. In this presentation the cognitive components of inquiry learning are outlined, typical cognitive processes of students are identified, and scaffolds that may help to prevent or overcome these problems will be shown. Experimental work assessing the effectiveness of online labs and scaffolds in particular will be shown. There will be an emphasis on examples from the EU Go-Lab project (www.golab-project.eu).
Ton de Jong is professor of Instructional Technology at the University of Twente. He specializes in inquiry learning (mainly in science domains) supported by technology (online labs, games, modelling environments). He was coordinator of several EU projects (e.g., SimQuest, Co-Lab, KITS, SCY) and several national projects including the ZAP project in which interactive simulations for psychology were developed. ZAPs are sold worldwide. For ZAP and SimQuest he has won a number of international prizes. For one of the SCY applications the Inquiry Based Instruction prize issued by Science was won in 2013. Currently he is coordinator of the 7th framework EU Go-Lab project. He published close to 200 journal articles and book chapters, is associate for the Journal of Engineering Education, and is on the editorial board of eight other journals. He has published papers in Science on inquiry learning with computer simulations (2006) and online laboratories (2013). He is AERA fellow and was elected member of the Academia Europaea in 2014. Development of Virtual Labs is an initiative of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. To ensure that the students of each and every technical institute get an easy and effective access to the expensive laboratory instruments through remote use of the lab equipment available in various higher level Institutes. The Virtual lab provides any student with an opportunity to operate the instruments unavailable in his/her institute and conduct experiments from the comfort of his home through the medium of internet.
The Biomedical virtual workbench is created and maintained by the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee. The Biomedical Virtual Lab aims at providing a platform for students to perform experiments remotely over the web through a user-friendly graphical front end, working in synchrony with a backend consisting of actual measurement data on a server. The user can acquire biomedical signals like EEG, ECG and EMG etc. The User can store these signals and analyse the signals using the online tools available in this lab.

Dr. Vinod Kumar is Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professor of Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee, INDIA. He received his Engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, M.Tech. & Ph.D. from IIT Roorkee, India (erstwhile University of Roorkee). He has many academic awards, distinctions and scholarships to his credit including the Khosla Research Awards of University of Roorkee, Ist IETE-R S Khandpur Medical Instrumentation Gold Medal in recognition of his life time achievements and outstanding contribution in the field of Biomedical Instrumentation 2006, Railways Board Award for the best paper on vibration analysis by IE(I) 2006, KS Krishna Memorial Award of IETE, The Brij Mohanlal Award of IE (I), best paper certificates of Awards of IE (I), The Corps of Engineers Prize of IR(I) , The Institution Prize of IE(I) 2011etc. He has been recognized as excellent performer for consecutive eight years of IIT Roorkee.
He is the best teacher awardees of IIT Roorkee. Prof. Vinod Kumar has more than 150 research papers to his credit in the area of Medical Instrumentation and Signal Processing. He has guided 22 Ph.D. more than 100 M.Tech. dissertations and more than 150 B.Tech. Projects in the area of medical instrumentation and digital signal & image processing.
He has held many positions in IIT Roorkee administration i.e., Professor & Head Electrical Engineering Department, Professor & Head Continuing Education Centre, National Coordinator QIP, Coordinator QIP Centre, Head, Information Super Highway Centre, Associate Dean Academic, Chair person of many Committees and is member of academic committees of many educational institutions and councils in India.
He has taken more than 80 assignments as consultant in diverse fields which includes development of instruments, signal processing packages, residual life assessment of power plants, e-governance and development of Virtual Labs.
He has 39 years of rich experience of teaching & research. He is a life fellow of IETE and IE (I) and is a senior member of IEEE. His areas of interest are Medical Instrumentation, Digital Signal & Image Processing.
This presentation will show how new global activities and technology are impacting Engineering Education. New ways of teaching, such as MOOCs and blended learning, as well as different kinds of learning analytics, assessment and engagement will be analyzed and connected. The evolution of teaching through face-to-face, distance learning and now online learning will be linked to the increasing use of technology in teaching, analyzing the main critical factors in the EHEA, USA and other reference countries and continents. This evolution is driving us to blended learning and jumping to open education (OCW and MOOCs) caused today by a change in the higher education paradigm pushed by the international crisis as well as the in-depth refurbishing of the public and private university roles in the different education steps and in longlife learning.

He is Fellow member of IEEE (for contributions to distance learning in electrical and computer engineering education) and member of the Borad of Governors (BoG) (2005ñ2012) of the IEEE Education Society and Jr Past-President (2015-2016) of the IEEE Education Society; Founder and Past-Chairman (2004-2006) of the Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Education Society, and Past-Chair of the IEEE Spain Section (2010-2011). He has been awarded with the 2012 TAEE (Technologies Applied to Electronic Education) Professional Career Award, IEEE EDUCON 2011 Meritorious Service Award (jointly with Edmundo Tovar) of the EDUCON 2011 conference; 2010 Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Education Society; 2009 Edwin C.
